STREET NAME
The canal and its accompanying quays were named after the humanist and legal scholar Hugo de Groot on March 30, 1881. The first section of the canal, near the Nassaukade, was dug around 1882 at the site of the Vinkenbuurtsloot, an old parcel ditch that ran along the Kerkpad van De Liefde. The old wooden houses had to make way for new construction.
